Central Alberta Regional Victim Serving Society

The Central Alberta Regional Victim Serving Society (CARVSS) was established in November 2023 to deliver a spectrum of services to Victims of Crimes within Central Alberta. These services, which address the immediate need for support and practical assistance, mitigation of trauma, promotion of public safety and justice system navigation, are provided under the Victims of Crime and Public Safety Act and Regulation in partnership with the Government of Alberta and the Alberta RCMP.

Based out of Leduc, the Central Region will oversee the delivery of services from 20 RCMP Detachments that provide frontline support to victims while they navigate through the Criminal Justice System process. These detachments are located in the following communities which comprise our Service Delivery Region (SDR):

We are currently seeking several volunteer directors to join our inaugural board.

As a Board Member, you will bring your unique experience, skills and expertise to advance this start-up organization’s, mission, strategy and goals as part of a diverse and qualified team of professionals who are responsible for governance, oversight, and strategic direction for the Central Alberta Regional Victim Serving Society.


Board Member Responsibilities:

Provide leadership, oversight and governance to the CARVSS

Develop and implement the vision, mission, values, strategic direction and goals for the CARVSS

Ensure the development, review and reporting of the operational and strategic plans

Develop, monitor and strengthen the CARVSS’s services and standing within its Service Delivery Region (SDR)

Ensure compliance with applicable legislation, policies, best practices and the requirements of the Program and Funding Agreement

Approve the annual budget and ensure the effective management of resources (i.e. finances, facilities, equipment and people)

Attend and participate in Board Meetings, Committee Meetings and the AGM

Contribute to the development, review and monitoring of operational and Board policies

Participate in the evaluations of the Board

Represent the function of Victim Services within the SDR

Ensure the CARVSS builds partnerships and co-operative arrangements with specialized Victim Serving Agencies

Stay informed of community issues related to the work of the organization

Nominate, elect and/or serve in Executive Committee positions that include the Board Chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer and Secretary.


Board Member Commitments:

The term of office for Board Members is 3 years with the option of extension

Executive Committee positions are set for a 1-year term

Attendance at Board Meetings and specialized meetings (i.e. AGM)

Participation in at least one Committee (Standing or Ad-hoc) or Working Group

Completion of Victim Services training (as specified by the Government of Alberta)

Ability to attend functions outside of normal business hours, as required

Commitment to and compliance with the Code of Ethics, Conflict of Interest, and Board Agreement



Qualifications and Experience:

We are seeking new board members who will help broaden our current board, with representation from within the communities in our Service Delivery Region (SDR). Key professional experience, education and/or expertise in one or more of the following areas is preferred:

Advocacy

Business Administration/Management

Community Partnership/Engagement

Executive Leadership

Financial Literacy/Accounting/Audit

Governance/Policy

Government Relations

Human Resources/Organizational Development

Law Enforcement/Criminal Justice System

Legal

Marketing/Communications/Public Relations

Non-profit

Project Management

Risk Management

Strategic Planning

Technology/Digital Transformation

Victim Services


Key Qualifications:

Demonstrated experience in initiating and leading complex change, including motivating the support and cooperation of key stakeholders

Demonstrated and sound knowledge of business and commercial principles and practices, including general knowledge of finance, people, governance and other critical business practices

General knowledge of legislation, government operations, systems and structures as they apply to the provision of Victim Services in Canada

Demonstrated knowledge and/or experience with the obligations applying to non-profit organizations in Canada

An understanding of Board governance

Experience in strategic planning, including developing operational plans and policies

Highly developed written and verbal communication skills with the ability to be confident, clear, respectful and sensitive

Strong collaboration and conflict resolution skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team

Prior experience working with communities in the SDR and stakeholders serving these communities

Proven ability to maintain the confidentiality of information and records

Demonstrated ability to achieve results in the context of a respectful, inclusive and service-minded style

Previous experience serving on a non-profit Board is considered an asset.

Computer literacy including effective working skills with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and videoconferencing technology


Key Requirements:

At least 18 years of age

Reside within the SDR*

Not be in bankrupt status

Not be employed with a Victim Serving Organization. Current employees of a government funded victim services organization must resign their position prior to volunteering as a CARVSS Board Member

Not intend to volunteer as a victim advocate and CARVSS Board Member at the same time

Be prepared to resign as a Board Members from any other Victim Serving Organization prior to commencing service on the CARVSS Board

Submit the results of a Criminal Record Check

Provide verification of qualifications

*NOTE: To ensure fair community representation from across the SDR, there will normally be a maximum of 1 Board Member from any RCMP detachment area.
